Changing Minds,

This book captures my attention from the title itself that the author has chosen, Changing Minds, as we everyday witness how difficult is to make ourselves to change our mind and to be deviant in certain situations or to convince our family members,  friends or colleagues deviant of their thoughts and to change their minds.  Easy as the title may sound, then the book goes deep in explaining the steps or levers as are called by the author to achieve to change minds;  that all beginning with the same letter `re` including reason, research, resonance, redescription, real world events, resistance and resources and rewards.

Society has deepened it knowledge on science field and has gone far with the technology development, internet, and digital area and so on and so forth. This part of developed science has become touchable by everybody nowadays, while psychological factors that shape our judgments and our behavior or give way to our opinions are not easily understood or explained by everybody.

This book reminds me of motivation, as the simplest definition of it is “the ability to change behavior”. It seems like humanity is deepening their knowledge on this complex matter, by trying to understand why people think or behave in a certain way in order then to make/ convince people to change their minds. i believe that although we can employ all the levers given in this book to change people's mind i think that we can not achieve our goal 100%, as we are humans, and of course our subordinates are humans as well and our mind can not be manipulated completely at the same levels. Although the CEO of a company can meet the employees of a specific department and make use all the levers, the impact that they might have to the employees of the department can not be the same to all employees but can vary from one person to another. When we talk to our subordinates we have to have to take into consideration  that they are all adults, and of course they have had their own experiences of life that have made them to behave in a certain way or to think in a certain way; although they might be very open during our persuasive speech, their original thoughts, opinions, attitudes or believes can not be manipulated so easy.

Everybody that has the economic possibility can make use of the most recent technology development in the world and enjoy it, and at the same time everybody can buy the book "changing minds" and read and read it several times but this won't make him master of changing his own mind or other peoples mind (not everybody can enjoy the results of the levers in the book). I still believe not everybody has the ability or the skills to change people's mind, i think that apart the levers given in the book by the author, it requires and it always will require some very specific skills that one person should have.
It is very good to be open to new ideas and continuously improving by changing but this is not such an easy task as we all would like it to be.

Thank you,

  1. Hi Jerina,
I agree with your opinion that it is not easy to change minds of other persons. It is difficult even to change our minds but if people are not sceptic and tend to be open and also to have the ability to "listen", it should be possible. Of course different people have different ways of thinking and looking at things but i find that the advices given through this book, are valuable escpecially for our business life.

  2. The only real way of making people move towards what we want. is to give them the elements to judge that what we are saying, what we are proposing is worth the choice they are making.

If we get the example of teachers and we use the word to mowl and not to educate, we would have the sense between trying to make people change their mind and decide what they really want.

Each person has is own concept, that have been built up throw experience that each of us makes since the first moments of life, this is essential in the way we take decision and also in the way we change our minds or we don't.

  3. There is a saying in Albania:"Ask hundred people and at the end take the decision on your own":)
So the others opinion wont change your mind .
