Bounce

This is one of the most practical books. Writing about the same topic as Malcom Gladwell's "Outliers" these books talk about how success and exellence in something require thousands of hours of practice. The author calls this purposeful practice. While Gladwell's book makes us believe we could raise our future children to be successful, Syed's "Bounce" makes us believe that we, ourselves and us could become successful. Using sporting achievements as his strong point, Syed challenges the presumption that talent, rather than striking a fortunate few like lightning, is instead the result of a perfect storm of hard work and circumstance.

  1. Believing in something beyond the self can have a hugely beneficial psychological impact, even if the belief is fallacious.

  2. The author gives several examples and challenges the concept of talent by stating that “talent is a myth"; I believe the two ingredients of success are necessary, both talent and hard work.
