Soon after our lecture I was wondering what kind of person the author of the book can be. The ideas didn’t seem bright or extraordinary to me but too materialistic. I said to myself: What a pity if you think that talent can be earned by practice. I am not against practice at all. This is what I am teaching my students. Anybody can reach very high sometimes incredible results by practicing and continuously working. There is truth and positivism in it but when we speak about inborn talent(what the author doesn’t accept) it is quite different topic. We know examples when without practice, just doing something for the first time some people realize that they can do something that is impossible for others. Some people can reach it after 10000 hours of practice but it is difficult for an atheist to accept that there is much shorter way and this way is given for you for temporary use.
The book gives examples of the people who could “get” their talent by practicing (by the way I can’t agree with Mozart’s example to the end). You can easily write another book which will prove the difference between the talented people who practice and untalented ones. Syed says that everybody can become a hero. It is very promising and motivating statement. I can agree that practice makes wonders but to refuse inborn talent is stupid, in my opinion.
Hi Olga,
YanıtlaSilI agree with you about talent. There are many people that are gifted for something and they are distinguishable since the very first moment from the ohers even with no experience at all.
Hi Olga, we have very similar feelings about this book. I too believe that hard work is essential but having said this we cannot disregard talent as a factor to success.
YanıtlaSilHi Olga,
YanıtlaSilTechnically you are right that without talent is pointless no matter how much you work or practice hard. But what took my attention to this book was a phrase from the author: "because of specific opportunities that make us work and practice harder"...
So, the author here also point out that you may also need some luck to bring your talent out with some hard work and practice...
At least my opinion :-)
