“Talent is a largely inoperative concept” claims Matthew Syed. I totally agree with it.

“Hard work is all that matters in order to be a champ” he says. I still agree with it but I have one question. What about being the champ in the league of champs (the Champions League :-) )? Is only hard work enough? I don’t think so.

You might be an expert in a specific field if you dedicate at least 10’000 hours to it. How about two people with 11001 and 11002 hours respectively? How do they compare? I don’t think ± 1 hour makes the difference. It is due to other factors IMO.

However I think one should concern him(her)self with such issues after he/she has become a true expert. Until then he/she has to work damn hard.

I want to conclude with a quote from Prof. Randy Pausch (R.I.P)

- You got tenure so early Randy. What’s your secret?

- Call me in my office Friday Night at 10 PM and I’ll tell you.

P.S. This is Randy Pausch's last lecture before he passed away and I recommend it to everybody to watch it.
