CHANGING MINDS

In this book, Mr Gardner applies his cognitive framework to the task of persuading people to adopt new ways of thinking about matters of importance. He comes up slickly with a list of seven memorable elements called levers that all beginning with the same letter `re` including reason, research, resonance, redescription, real world events, resistance and resources and rewards.
In the book,Margaret Thatcher is given as an example for the changing the minds of English people by using correctly real world events. But Robert Shapiro,a lawyer who, as head of Monsanto, tried to change the world` s mind about genetically modified food and he failed because of unprepared for resistances.
In my opinion, for the changing theminds of human, showing the reason and datas to individuals is the highest effect. For example if a person wants to make diet to decrease his or her weight, you can show some datas from individuals who made diet for a definite diet program and this person belives the effect of diet program and continues. Also for elections in a country if you can why the chosing of this person is important and giving datas for his or her projects and showing the previous bad conditions to the voters, they can change their ideas if they don`t have constant or dogmatic thoughts.

  1. Dear Feyzullah,
As you wrote, showing the reason and data to individuals are very important. Rational or not everybody has a reason for their actions. So you should give them reasons to change and explain them well.

  2. Hi Feyzullah!
What I liked mostly of your article is the last sentence:
-they can change their ideas if they don`t have constant or dogmatic thoughts- it is true if we dont think rationally we can never go ahad.

  3. Hi Feyzullah,
Changing minds is in fact a process in terms that it happens gradually and during this process, as you mentioned, showing relevant data to individuals is important. For me is interesting that the authors emphasis is put not only in "Changing minds" but also in the fact how to achieve it, withot manipulations.

  4. It is interesting to see how some people, mostly known to be very charismatic, are capable of moving masses towards them, just by the way they are, behave and act. Charisma, from the greek χαρισμα, meaning "favor given" or "gift of grace", is the charm that some people have and that brings the others a sense of devotion.

Having good comunication skills is surely an open door to people that try to make other people change their mind, starting from the body language and going to a good and energic hand shake, but this are only one of the factors in the game.

  5. Hi Feyzullah it is interesting indeed how some statistical data or graphs can change people's mind. People tend to be affected from statistics and generalize situations. As you mention we see repeatedly politicians using statistics during election, we saw it even recently so It must be successful method :)

  6. Hi Feyzulah Bey. RESISTANCE to change, this is the part that is very crucial in changing minds, because in most of the cases RESISTANCE is like making a Lion eat grass and making a Cow eat meat. So the power of changing mind should focus a lot on making people to changes
