The spirit level

I think this book has a very strong message. While the level of the problems caused by inequality are vast and sobering, it is made clear by the authors that relatively small moves toward greater equality can yeld great benefits, and it doesn't matter how you achieve that, just as long as you do. This has profound implication for politics showing that tax and spend is not the only solution. Narrowing the gab in incomes before tax can also work. Therefore there exists a real chance for a political consensus in favor of equality. The book also emphasises that we don't have to have a fully blown revolution to insrease massively the well being and sustainability throughout the world. The authors point out that more equal developed countries are more nurturing and collaborative, so they give far more to the developing world in terms of overseas aid and score better in the Global Place Index and are more likely to abide by international treates. This book poses the big question about what it means to be human and what we now need to do in order to survive. These are the big ideas that the world's current leaders are failing to seize upon. This is much more than an academic book, it's a call to action.

I agree that this book is not just digits and statistics. It should provoke leaders to take different steps, take lessons and simply think about prosperity of their country or a company.

  4. Dear Elda,
I agree with you, i believe that although the book has a lot of graphics and statistics it is not written just an informative book. It's goal is to make leaders aware and at the same time to make them ac, it provokes them to change their mind consciously by thinking for the prosperity of their countries.

  5. I share the same opinion with you about the book. However it has always been like this, the gap between rich and poor and inequality to resources and opportunities has always been there but we could see the size of the problem, and the perception of this gap was different. The graphs of the book illustrate the proportions of inequality and related problems and help people create the same view on this. I believe the intention of the writers is to make leaders stop ignoring the problem and act for change.

I agree with you that this book is not presenting us just numbers but the authors are trying to give a message to all the involved parties that doing small steps toward equality can lead to results.
