What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

This book holds the info or workplace habits that often keep successful people from making the next big leap forward in their career. The author, Marshall Goldsmith, “seeks to identify those habits and help you to overcome them so you can make that next big leap in whatever you’re planning to do with your life”.

Usually the further you progress in your career, the more experience and intelligence you have/ collect and so more responsibility use to be in the game. The more your career progresses, the less it differentiates you. In other words, “what got you here won’t get you there.”

Once you have reached a point in your career where intelligence or technical skill no longer differentiates you, emotionals intelligence becomes an important differentiator.

The good news about emotional intelligence is that compare to general intelligence/ability, emotional intelligence can be developed.

For example, lets think of a recent difficult situation or conversation we faced. Imagine ourselves from one or two decades earlier in our career being in the same situation. Hopefully, our response in this moment will be more responsabel/ intelligent, self-aware and productive than our reaction might have been earlier in our life. That difference is an example of how emotional intelligence tends to develop naturally with our age.

But what if you don’t have a decade to develop your emotional intelligence?!

My suggestions: 360o behavior, reading books on the people aspects of leadership, observation of people who are highly effective in working with others, and asking regularly for feedback.

  1. Dear Idi,
I wish I had read your post before writing my own. I have read some reviews about the book but none of them as useful as yours since they just summarise the book. Especially the sentence ‘The more your career progresses, the less it differentiates you.’ strikes. It is simply superb.

  2. You are emphasizing on a very crucial point of this subject i.e. improvement of emotional intelligence. It is a fact that, emotional intelligence plays a much more important role than normal intelligence in career development or saying differently in business life. There are many people who were brilliant students, but not so successful in business life while some others who graduated with average grades, but have a very successful in professional business life. This result can be mostly explained by emotional intelligence level of people.

Most of the people learn how to think and to act to be successful, but unfortunately it takes a quite long time for majority of them. Few people improve their emotional intelligence when they are young due to close environment they live in,genetic properties, capability to improve and thus they generally become more successful in the life.
