Made to Stick Chip and Dan Heath

The perception I received after the lesson and after discussing about “Made to stick” is that this book is about positioning ideas and propositions in such a way that they “stick” (get the attention of the community, other people, audience etc.).

Together (Stick Chip & Dan Heath) find that the key to creating traction is to take your idea, whatever it may be, and present it in a Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional Story.

However in my opinion we have to concentrate ourselves more in simplicity and getting everything the more emotional possible (I am not saying to surpass the other steps only to concentrate more in the first and last step):

SIMPLICITY

Nowadays, where everybody has possibility to collect information (a lot of information) can elaborate so many ideas and information than before 20-30 years ago. And of course this is a very good think, but when it comes to transmit their ideas or opinion they do it in very complicate way (the negative effect of having a lot of info about one theme at once).

So, my advice (especially for people who are in Managerial positions) is that they need to spend more time simplifying their messages.

"This is the hardest step," taking your idea and distilling it down, putting away everything that's not essential."

EMOTIONAL STORY

Showing that your ideas are in connection with the things they are interest in by connecting it in an emotional and if it is possible (depending from the situation) touching way!

Now that your audience’s (once you have gone thru all steps) is attracted by your story, you have to make the final (in my opinion the decisive one) step, connect your audience emotionally (to make it personally) and their mind will stick to your story and you will succeed in your goal.

So, good luck to everyone in your “sticky story“!

  1. I think, your determination is very correct.I have lived some experiences-personally or around me- and also have read many cases from people's lives.Basing on those examples,I can certainly tell you that, you ideas can' be stick unless the message is given in a simple way and at least one real story is included even though it is a proper one from the other aspects such as being unexcepted, concrete, credible, emotional.

For me, the above mentioned usual result is related with the nature of human being. people,in general, like simple things.Even if you want to explain something on a deep, complicated issue, you have to find a way of giving your message as much as simple. It is also a fact that, people usually don't believe in what you explain,if you don't put some real cases in your presentation. These two elements are really the musts to stick one idea on people's minds.

  2. Dear Idi,
When I was reading the part 'Nowadays, where everybody has possibility to collect information (a lot of information)...' in your post, I once more remembered that our minds have turned into information dustbins and it disturbs. I think we should look into the matter of simplicity from that point as well.
