Predictably Irrational

In his book “Predictably Irrational”, the author Dan Ariely, is trying to address the idea that “life with fewer market norms and more social norms would be more satisfying, creative, fulfilling and fun”.

In many pages of the book the author has been trying to explain that what makes you and the people around you tick, by presenting a wide range of scientific experiments, findings, and anecdotes.

What seems to be contradictory is that the author is emphasizing on the idea of fewer market rules by presenting some social rules which again will serve to the market. Without trying to make a game of words, the social rules proposed by the others, if they will be implemented in practice, in market economy, despite the fact that they are considered social rules, will serve again to the market, and later be named again as market rules.

The question that we raise would be? For what do the market rules serve? Certainly, to have a regular economic market, to serve better to the client, and the most important to increase the profit. Trade and market have existed since the ancient times and populations worldwide, sellers and buyers, have created their attitudes and behaviors while trading, which are different from country to country. For example, in the western countries you rarely make a bargain in trade while it is a tradition in the eastern countries to enter a deal and bargain with the seller. Some studies have shown that sellers and clients are happier with the traditional ways of trade. You may see tourists wandering in the old markets than in supermarkets or modern building of trades.

The final idea is to leave the market rules as they have been established in centuries, traditional and meaningful; according to the cultures they have established them, because this is the best combination of market and culture rules.

  2. According my opinion it has been an effective marketing strategy for as long as there have been retailers. But today, analysts say, that theory is driving a sales-crazy marketplace in which retailers, desperate to survive tough times, finding increasingly creative ways to lure consumers who consider 20% off as the new full price
