The Dragonfly Effect

They say a picture is worth a million words.....

Well this one is worth a million dollars.

The million dollar home page (http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/) was created in August 2005 by Alex Tew who wanted to raise money for his university education. He created a webpage, divided it into a million pixels, and put them for sale, each costing one dollar. Friends and family began buying pixels from him, putting anything they wanted in the bought ones.
Words spread and by Jan/11/2006 he had sold all the pixels earning $ 1.037.100 in total.

(Details in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Million_Dollar_Homepage)

If you ask the authors of this book about anything special he did, they would probably say he did nothing but using the 4 wings of the dragonfly, specifically:

1. Focus Your Goal

2. Grab Attention

3. Engage Others

4. Take Action

And he succeeded. Well done him!

Now the following question rises. Countless replicas or similar pages were created right after this one. Their sales were negligibly small. Why?

Please don't tell me others didn't use the 4 wings of the dragonfly quite well :-)

  1. Dear Saimir,

I found your post very interesting, I had not heard about this story before. About your “why” the others did not succeed in the same form, I don’t really know… it seems that there are a lot of reasons… or may be it is matter of chance? I think that a similar thing happened with Facebook. There are a lot of similar social websites such as Hi5, Myspace etc., but Facebook resulted the most successful and famous one… Why???

  2. Dear Erisa,

First of all I'm really glad you liked the post.

Regarding the why question: I don't know what the answer is, but at least I know what the answer is not.

The 4 wings of the dragonfly rule is really tricky. It says that the achievers have followed them rigorously but it doesn't say that the rigorous followers have achieved.

P.S.To achieve you need the 4 wings plus smth more that cannot be quantized and analyzed in a retrospective analysis.

    See my point? :-)
