Predictably Irrational

The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions

I, indeed, or people around do a lot of irrational actions, It seems as a way to support our personal equalibrium even knowing that we shall behave the opposite way. Familiar, isn’t it?

A very interesting idea of explaining the differencies between rationality and irrationality in co-ordinates which was given by Gregory Reinin, Russian mathematician:

Here graphically, without any extra explanations we may understand the differences: rationality is logical and clearly oriented, irrationality is intuitive, with orientation unclear, result unpredictable. The co-ordinates may be applied in describing our behaviors as well.

I don’t think that book will change my behavior and I would try to act more rational, especially after Dan Ariely mentioned so many stories where irrationality had leaded to positive and exceptional results, gaining competitive advantages and qualitative indexes for the organizations, based on irrational behaviors of the characters. But at the end we should keep in our minds, Too much water drowns the miller.

Tatiana

  1. Your posts are so interesting Tatiana that I cannot pass by without commenting on them.

I liked the attempt to graphically represent the (i)rrationals but I have one question.

What happens if we turn our head ± 45 degrees while looking at the second picture? Do we instantly become rational? I wish it were that simple? :)

As your last paragraph is concerned I totally agree with you.
One has to find where the right balance between rationality and irrationality lies. This is a very difficult task IMHO because the range of places this balance can be, is quite big and can be continuously forged by the values, norms mentalities etc. that a specific society possesses.

  2. Dear Tatiana,

I agree with you and is very interesting to see somebody's life from a different point of view. It is like reading the usage instruction of a product before you use it and you still end up making some mistake and unpredicatable personal decision due to your irrational behavior. The point is that we can try to behave rational but we can not as we are not perfect, we are just human beings but what we can do is to try to control our irrational behaviour and come up with some better solution on the right moment.

And as a closing phrase I wanted to come up with an Albanina phrase, which means...the food with salt but salt with a good measure (Gjella me kripe e kripa me karar :-)

    Good evening

  3. Tatiana,

It is seems a fair and concise comment of the book. Despite the many examples given by the author about what is rational and irrational everyone has his own mind and should keep with it. This can be seen in a better way while discussing or arguing with someone with whom you disagree. At the end of the discussion you say for the interlocutor that his discussion is irrational or baseless and he/she may say the same thing for your discussion. This is based on the fact that there are not strict rules about people’s mind and behavior and what can be rational for you cannot be for the other. So at the end, stick to your mind.

  4. Dear Tanja,

In my opinion the idea of graphs explaining the differences between rationality and irrationality is just great. Rationality guides to a quit life, without many troubles, meanwhile irrationality leads to emotions that sometimes are good and sometimes not, but human nature is like this and it is hard to change.
