Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions

Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions

by Dan Ariely

Irrational behaviour is a part of human nature, but people tend to behave irrationally in a predictable trend/ tendency.

So everything that define good or bad is determined form the context in which a event is happening.

Irrational behavior show us why people make poor decisions about feelings, why patients get greater relief from a more expensive drug or why honest people may steal office supplies or communal food, but not money.

According to Ariely, “our understanding of economics, now based on the assumption of a rational subject, should, in fact, be based on our systematic, unsurprising irrationality”.

I think choices are rarely made without a reference to other similar situations (here I mean personal experiences or situation, which we were spectator). When we make a decision, we make our choices based on the different choices presented to us in that particulary moment

The tonight lecture it makes me thinking that we are very curios beings and with an insightful way how our mind works and why we are often irrational in our decision making.

  1. Dear Idi,

I agree with you saying that:” everything that define good or bad is determined form the context in which a event is happening.” Yes we shall analyze all the circumstances of our decisions making because different factors may alter our decisions. But I think that our choices are not made “without a reference to other similar situations”. For example, we use to refer to our previous experience of a restaurant, we often go to the same because we liked the previous lunch/dinner there.

  2. Hi Idi,

You exactly admitted our human nature - we are very curios, and from here we gain and suffer at the same time. Sometimes curiosity kills the cat. If not so, the result might be vice versa, very profitable, but too risky or high price paid.

    Thank you,
    Tatiana

  3. Yes naturally we expect same statistics for same kind of choices but why we change our decisions it is unexplainable thing. That is the way, people can change, giving different choices is the best way to change their decisions.

  4. Irrationality is part of what is called the human side and although many people try and force themselves to act only rationally they feel something is missing. Its the magic link of irrationality. the special touch of God.......
