Dragonfly effect

     When we just see the expression “Dragonfly effect” we have association of something influential (effect) and something that is above the ground( a flying insect). The authors so wisely thought about the name that it deserves appreciation. The creation of this insect is incredible! I will not mention zoological details but everybody knows that helicopter was made after studying the peculiarities of a dragonfly. So, this machine can land on the places impossible for other vehicles to help people.

     This book, to my mind was written in such a way that can be easily read and influence engineers and teachers, businessmen and bankers, because all of us use social media. But how to use it effectively for society, for your firm, for yourself? This book gives us many bright examples of how to gain by helping others. What I mean to say is that it is top feeling of happiness to realize that you made somebody a little bit happier, even one person. And if we use media it is not one but many more. I was impressed by a story” It’s a small wired world” because:

1.it started with an eight-year-old girl who was not indifferent to the problem;

2.it was simple and clear

3.even before reading the story the topic seemed to be interesting;

4.it made me think.

     “The 93 Dollar Club on “Facebook” reminded me a story which I tell to my students when the topic comes around. It’s name is “Flying”. There was an orphan boy who had always wanted to fly like a bird. There was another boy who was crippled. His only dream was to walk and run like other boys and girls. One day the boy who wanted to fly met the crippled boy playing in the sandbox in the park. By the time they became very close friends. Once when crippled boy’s father came to pick his son up, the boy who wanted to fly whispered something into the father’s ear. Father agreed with the idea. The boy came up to his friend and said: “I can’t make you walk and run like other boys and girls but there is something I can do for you.” The little orphan boy told his friend to slide up onto his back. Faster and faster he ran, carrying the little crippled boy on his back. Harder and harder he made his legs travel. The wind whistled across the two happy little faces. The little boy’s father began to cry as he watched his crippled son flapping his arms and yelling: “I AM FLYING, DADDY. I AM FLYING!”

MADE TO STICK

       Even though it is not an invention or a new idea, the most important thing in the book is the part about ‘The Curse of Knowledge’. Without knowledge nothing will last long. We will not understand what the message is, what someone is trying to do, where we are going. We give messages through knowledge.
       From the acronym SUCCESs, the most striking ones are ‘Simplicity (as I believe ‘perfection is in simplicity’), ‘Credibility (as when believe in something you start defending it) and ‘Stories” (as almost everyone loves/likes stories and our life starts with listening to stories at very early ages. Stories are our windows to outer world in our childhood).
      But there is something more, even more important than some ideas in the acronym; it is repetition. Some people may think it is a waste of time, energy, etc. and there are shorter ways to learn or acquire something, but not only does repetition make things stay in mind but it also makes people, builds characters. In Turkey there is one saying ‘if you call someone ‘mad’ for forty days, they will become mad’. There is also a recent research done by Cambridge University about the importance and stickiness of repetition. According to the research, if someone repeats a word 320 times in a bit less than 15 minutes, this word stays in mind. Many years ago a similar kind of experience I did myself. Once I was going on a tram and there was nothing to do. I decided to repeat a phrase that I just read. I repeated it 100 times and didn’t use it anymore. After some months when one of my students asked how to say that phrase, I just uttered it without thinking. I was surprised myself how well it worked. Yes, once more I am saying ‘repetition is important’.

WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON’T GET YOU THERE

Normally nobody was born smart.Day by day learn and experience new things,new situations no matter how important they are.To have a successful career we need have a look at others and try to understand why they are so successful and what the weak point of them are.We need to have our game to move on because then ,it wouldn't be nothing more than copying someone.People became famous because they improve social character different then the others.But to reach the peak of your career ,where you now have become an expect is always improve the way need to move on that concerned in how to speak or behave more professional as you get older.And this point of view must be a part of our life be more better at our work.

How China and India Are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours

Tea “with an elephant” and "Chindia"

I didn’t know too many details about life in China or India, mainly my knowledge was limited to that these countries are two the most populated countries in the world and geographically are located close by, as well as everybody else knows Chinese stuffs, equipments or noodles and Indian tea (at all times in Russia tea “with the elephant” was the best tea or maybe it was the only tea since in USSR times India was the main supplier of tea) and Indian movies. Nowadays more often we can here word “Chindia”, I don’t know if this term was said by Professor Tarun Khanna but considering the fact that both India and China are called the most potential countries for the growth and their proximity on the map, in spite of all their differences (cultural, economic, political, or technological: Chinese hardware but Indian software) one day we might here about “Chindia” for real.

There are already actual examples on the way -I was surprised to get to know about Huawei - Chinese company, second largest supplier of telecom equipment in the world and rapidly strengthen their position in Albanian market. Huawei has an R&D establishment in India and employs Indian software engineers. Operating systems for most of Huawei’s equipments have been developed in Indian R&D Center. This is a good example of “Chindia” successful collaboration and there are more examples of collaboration can be found at the same time as examples of their competition.

THE SPIRIT LEVEL

This book seems to be very near to the actual economic situation by explaining the relation between the spirit level and the difference of incomes among the people. I would like to evaluate thoughts by showing my opinion. The difference between the highest and lowest incomes seems to be more than a thousand dollars, or more than ten times. This means one person is equal more than ten persons can be. What does it mean? This means that one person suffers too much to keep that work place or job. To keep the work place he/she can do everything, even showing illegal behaviors. The concept of working time is something abstract for those people who have a high income. To protect a good salary you should use your private time in favor of your work. Working time seems to be directly proportional to the monthly income. All those things show that those people (who seem to be a limited group) live in daily stress. For this category the number of job providers is limited. If an employee from this limited group does not fulfill his/her duty the he/she may lose the job. If we have a look on the other side, we see the spirit level of the persons who has low income. Their daily stress is a little different. They try to survive in daily life and financially support the family. The job providers for this category are not limited. While the first group of employees try to keep their job by doing their best, on the other side the second group try to survive their lives and their respective families. So the spirit level of these groups seems to be different.

I preferred only discussing about the employees high and low incomes but if we evaluate the smallest group of businessman this differences of incomes become a real high gap, which means their stress may be different in kind but similar in level.

Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better?

The “Global Risks 2011” Report has been released at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Risks research had been conducted based on survey from 580 decision-makers of the world to measure their perception of Risks of the future. Among the other possible risks (environmental, economic, technological, geopolitical) there was societal risk of economic disparity which surprisingly was selected as one of the most perceived likelihood to occur in the next 10 years. The leaders of the world picked up the economic inequality: wealth and income differences; they are more afraid of social revolutions than of earthquakes / storms, wars, pollutions or terrorism.

The main threat is that “the rich get richer while the poor get poorer”

Richard Wilkinson and Kate Picket in their book provide us with a lot of different graphs / statistics based on the countries, though here I would like to quote the Professor of Economics Sala-i-Martin, with whom I completely agree and who says: "You have to look at people, "Because if you look at countries, we do have lots and lots of little countries that are doing very poorly, namely Africa — 35 African countries." But all Africa has only about half as many people as China."

WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON’T GET YOU THERE

When I went through the notes about this book especially ‘the 20 bad habits that hold you back from the top’, I once more realized that the most important quality to quit those bad habits is ‘honesty’, although it is not the only one. As it can be stated in short, ‘a healthy organization is the one that is open and honest enough to nip problems in the bud. Most major issues become major because the root causes haven’t been dealt with quickly and with candor and honesty.’ The most dangerous one is that dishonesty becomes our personality. Selfishness is described as the rule of the game to win and we become a part of the game drifting in the river of self-seek. Another important thing is that many people can’t get out of this river by themselves even though they realize they are drifting into the wrong direction. They need a wise and friendly hand to get them out. To find a wise and honest friend is one of the most important values to run after.
